Sept. 28-Oct. 1, 2015

(plus optional full-moon paintout on Sept. 27 and other night-time presentations and lectures during the course with both classes combined)

$575 for either workshop

Class description for Lori Putnam's Workshop:

The key to growth in the studio begins by working often and observing life outdoors. Plein air painters will search for clues in the scene to capture the distinct character of a place, and gain insight in to the ways different types of light convey time of day, weather, and season. To benefit most from this workshop, previous plein air experience is strongly suggested. Workshop includes lectures and discussions, slide presentations, demonstrations, individual painting time, personal instruction, and group exercises. Demonstrations will be in oil, but artists who are experienced in other mediums are welcome. Students are required to have their own plein air equipment. (Alternative studio classroom may be substituted in the case of inclement weather.)

Class description for Dawn Whitelaw's Workshop:

Painting from a live model is an effective way to improve skills in painting any subject matter. In this workshop you will receive instruction on drawing, design, proper value and color use, and edge control. There will be particular emphasis on capturing the quality of light and character of the model. To benefit most from this class, an artist should have some drawing skills and a working knowledge of the medium they are using. The instruction is designed for painters using oil paint, but the class is open to artists who are experienced using acrylic or pastel as well. The class will consist of power point presentations, lectures, demos, as well as individual instruction.

4-day Plein air / Studio Workshop Combination

October 29–November 1, 2015

Advanced-Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced Painters welcome.
Plein air experience strongly recommended.

As an artist you know you see differently than the rest of the world; you feel inspired and excited by scenes and cannot wait to paint them. Throughout your painting, you loathe some passages, wonder if others are finished or overworked, and live in fear that you will "mess up" the very best parts of the painting that you actually like. In the end, your completed works do not convey your original inspiration or excitement.

Brushwork, paint consistency, and fearlessness are rarely taught. Lori Putnam believes they are essential to mastering more thrilling paintings. In this workshop, students will begin en plein air making many sketches, grasping excitement, and capturing ideas. These sketches (most with little or no detail) will then be used as inspirational material for more-complete studio pieces that remain fresh and inviting.
